My books, Spelling Rules, Reasons and Rebels as you Learn to Read, and The Inside Story of English Spelling, do not use IPA symbols. As most parents and teachers do not know the IPA,  ordinary letters in square brackets are used, except for two IPA symbols, Eng and Schwa.

IPA symbols are very good for expressing the exact word-sound under discussion.

So I am using IPA symbols as I write my next book, The E Book, All About E. If you wish to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet, I have prepared two A4 pages for you to open, read and print.​
